Nine Days to Malawi

Still no sight of the free-standing mosquito net I ordered more than two weeks ago. Travmed, the mail-order company I used, says the manufacturer of the Indoor Travel Tent is going out of business. (In that case, you would think Travmed would take the item off their web site, which they haven't as of this morning.) In any case, I've ordered a replacement.

I get my second hepatitis B shot later this week. Now I'm sorting through the clothes, toiletries, notebooks and rechargeable batteries to figure how much I can lug.

I've organized the Malawi trip a little like a long-distance hike with resupply from friends and fellow travellers who will be coming from the U.S. at various intervals. But also hope to help the Malawian economy by buying local whenever I can. Can't wait.

Christine, you do not have to worry about arriving in Malawi without an insecticide-treated mosquito net. My organization has been working closely with the Ministry of Health and other partners for several years now to help make nets available in a wide variety of outlets across the country through social marketing, as well as for free via public sector health clinics for pregnant women and mothers of children under five. Although you are not in our target group of low-income Malawians, I am sure you can find a Chitetezo Net for sale at a commercial outlet in Lilongwe like Metro, etc. Good luck with the trip. Feel free to be in touch when you are here. John Justino, PSI/Malawi.

Hey, John. Thanks for the information. That's one more thing crossed off my list. Hope to see you in Malawi. Christine

Guess that's not the type of thing L.L. Bean specializes in. Ah well. If Maine caused malaria, it wouldn't be the "vacation state" -- black flies not withstanding.
Travel well, friend. XX A

Thanks, Alicia! I think I still have divots in my legs from where Maine's black flies got me 20 years ago.
