Proposed: Global Health Blogging Experiment

Reading Jon Shaffer's post on three top debates in global health gave me an idea. What if we organized a bunch of global health bloggers to coordinate their posts around a single topic and then picked a day where we agreed to post them all? It might increase the visibility of some of the deeper issues in global health.

Each blogger would take the part of the debate that had the most resonance to them. Say, for example, the topic were "prevention vs. treatment." Maryn McKenna might write about it in the case of antibiotic resistance. I might write about it in the community health vs hospital context. Alanna Shaikh might write about it based on her experiences in Central Asia. Then we would update our individual posts with links to what the others had to say.

You might think of it as a blog carnival (defined as "a rotating showcase of interesting writing from around the blogosphere within a particular discipline"), although that may be too organized for our first effort. The most exciting part is that we're starting to get enough of a critical mass of global health bloggers that this is even possible. What do you think?

Great! How does prevention vs. treatment sound to you as a first topic? How much time do you think we should take to build up the number of bloggers who participate?

Me too (also RT'd). We can ask Pia Christensen to out it on the AHCJ blog - might get additional recruits that way.

Prevention vs. treatment works for me. I'm thinking maybe 2 weeks notice?

Sounds like a plan. Let's say Jan. 29, 2009 for everyone's best thoughts/evidence on prevention vs. treatment.

Very cool idea and any exhange of information/ideas is pretty cool, in my book.

I have participated in "Grand Rounds" with a group of "medical bloggers" using a similiar idea and I would offer their link as a reference:
http://getbetterhealth.com/ is the blog that started this and each week medical bloggers host and discuss topics from other blogs.

I'd love to participate, as well!

Thanks!

Great initiative. The prevention vs treatment still hot at the Global AIDS conf. in Mexico. If I may, I'd like to weigh in on the old idea that mismanagement of monitoring treatment in the case of HIV/AIDS is detrimental to effective prevention.

Erik, Thanks for the link. We may not be as organized as Ground Rounds but it's something to aspire to!

Christine,

I would certainly be up for it. I like how you call it an "experiment". Perhaps we could even get some coverage of it from the more traditional press.

However, that probably would not be where I would start as far as topics go, but I could be convinced....

Karen,
A post about why prevention vs. treatment is a false debate? The wrong place to start?

And yes, it is an experiment to see, among other things, who will participate, how much or how little structure is needed and also whether we can get the conversation to a broader audience, beyond just the folks who are crazy about global health.

Would be interesting to see if the mainstream media will pick it up on its own. It's not the conventional story--artificial peg and all that. Don't even have the excuse that anyone officially declared it Prevention vs. Treatment Debate Day.

Could also give us an idea of how the emerging online global health network is shaping up.

Talk it up. We'll see what happens.

I think it's a great idea, and we here at Seton Hall Law (HealthReformWatch.blogspot.com) would love to participate.

Great idea - and the prevention vs. treatment theme is a good choice, too.

The Pump Handle would love to participate!
